“The hills are alive” in this final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein which was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain. But war is imminent, and Austria is invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. This production is Rated G

Ascension Community Theatre
presents “Gypsy.”

Written by Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, “Gypsy”chronicles the fall of vaudeville and the rise of burlesque as seen through the showbiz lives of stage mother Rose and her daughters - talented, dainty June, and Louise, who transforms from nebbish no-talent to the queen of the striptease, Gypsy Rose Lee. Ms. Lee's memoirs served as the basis for the musical, which features such songs as "Let Me Entertain You," "All I Need is the Girl," and "Everything's Coming Up Roses."
Bryan Songy directs an all-star cast of local performers, led by Lorna Culmone Bourgeois, in the classic show, often hailed as the pinnacle of Broadway's Golden Age. The production staff is rounded out with musical direction by Bret Bello, Susanne Mire as assistant director and mentor, choreography by Zac Denham and Camryn Denham, and Danielle Delaune as stage manager.
The show will take the stage on July 8-10 and 15-17 at 7 pm, with Sunday matinees July 11 and 18 at 2 pm. ACT will host Gala Nights of "Gypsy" on July 23rd and 24th as a fundraising event. Gala performances of “Gypsy” include dinner and drinks as well as a performance of the show.

Manship Theatre presents:
Dr. John & the Lower 911
Wednesday August 25
2 performances 6:30p.m. & 9 p.m.

Dr. John, or Mac Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His very colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. A notorious gun incident forced the artist to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano. Further trouble at home sent Dr. John west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison and Aretha Franklin to name a few. He also launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Night Tripper. Adorned with voodoo charms and regalia, a legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-gris, which established his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots.
Dr. John garnered Grammy award wins in 1989, 1992, 1996 and 2000. In 2004, his musical love letter to the city of New Orleans, "N'awlinz Dis Dat or D'udda," was awarded the prestigious Académie Charles Cros 57ème Palmarès award in France. It was the first time since the 1970s that an artist from North America received the award.
