BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo
Hosts 6th Annual Zoo Zoom 5K
August 28

It's time to sprint, gallop and trot to the finish line at BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo in hopes to claim the much-coveted ostrich egg trophy. Join Club South Runners at the zoo for its 6th annual Zoo Zoom 5K on Saturday, Aug. 28, at 8:15 a.m. The day also includes our children's ½-mile fun run at 7: 45 a.m., so the whole family can participate. Registration may be done by mail or on race day beginning at 6:30 a.m.
"We have runners who have not missed a single year of this race," said Mary Woods, Friends of the Baton Rouge Zoo marketing director. "Zoo Zoom is unique from other races simply for its location. Not often do you get to jog next to cheetahs, elephants and giraffes."
Whether you sprint like a cheetah or crawl like a tortoise, this race is for you. Prizes are awarded to first male and female and in age group categories. Pre-register by Aug. 13 and the cost is $12 for Club South members and $14 for non Club South members. Cost is $20 after Aug. 13 and on the day of the race.
A portion of each registration fee supports the zoo's conservation programs for threatened and endangered animals. Cheetahs, in particular, are losing their race for survival. The world's fastest land animal, the cheetah can run up to 70 mph. Loss of habitat, human-animal conflict and loss of genetic variation are the main factors contributing to the cheetah's declining numbers in the wild.
"Cheetahs are endangered, and need our help if they are to survive," said Jennifer Shields, education curator at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. "In addition to the race and festivities, our education staff will be under the pavilion with animal touch-carts and cheetah information. We have coloring sheets for the children and other activities to help people understand the plight the cheetah is now facing in the wild."
Visit www.brzoo.org  or www.brec.org/zoozoom10  for more information or to download your registration form.
Discover the animal kingdom at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, including elephants, giraffes, rhinos and alligators. Don’t miss the zoo’s new blockbuster Realm of the Tiger with Sumatran and Malayan tigers. Visitors can enjoy the new Flamingo Cove and Giants of the Islands, featuring the zoo’s Chilean flamingos and Galapagos and Aldabra tortoises, as well as the Safari Playground, the Otter Pond, our exhibit featuring a replicated fishing cabin with underwater viewing of the otters, L'aquarium de Louisiane, Parrot Paradise and KidsZoo. Adults and children can ride the Cypress Bay ou Railroad on a scenic ride through the unique Louisiana habitat that surrounds the core zoo. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Look for the AZA logo whenever you visit a zoo or aquarium as your assurance that you are supporting a facility dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you and a better future for all living things.
It is the BREC mission to provide parks and recreational opportunities for all citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish.
