Happy Mother’s Day to all moms
this month. I feel lucky to be able to count myself in this group.
There was a time when I didn’t think I’d get to be a mom. Many
thanks to prayers and with the help of doctors, I am the mom to 10
year-old triplets and an 8 year-old surprise. I had the honor this
week of being present in the delivery room when a relative
introduced her son - now a big brother - to his brand new baby
brother. It was a moment that was touching to everyone present. It
made me aware of how much my children have grown right before my
eyes.
The month of May also marks the end of the school year.
Congratulations to all (moms included) for completing another year
of school. I am always ready for school to end in May and for it to
begin again in August. The school year cycle always brings
excitement, relief and anticipation to everyone in our family.
Although, for me, I also look at the end of a grade as one year
closer to graduation and the kids - then young adults - leaving the
nest. I am certainly not ready to entertain thoughts of that nature,
and can only imagine that I’ll be ready to turn back the clock when
that time comes.
Some interesting facts about Mother’s Day:
- Mother's Day is now the most popular day of the year to dine out
at a restaurant in the United States.
- Mother's Day ranks as the third most popular holiday in the world,
after Christmas and Easter.
- Long ago people in England honored their mothers on a day called
“Mothering Sunday.”
- The special flower for the day is a carnation.
- Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948) was the founder of Mother’s Day in the
United States. It was her own mother’s idea, and Anna carried it
out.
- President Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day to be on the second
Sunday in May.
- We take this day to honor good mothers everywhere, and to bring
families together.
I hope that everyone gets crayon scribbled “I Love You’s” and many
hugs and kisses. Enjoy the time off from school with your kids these
next few months. Lazy summer days without homework and hectic
schedules are the best. I cherish every summer and try not to count
them down... because I know that their numbers are limited. |
